I believe each writer has their own world they sometimes lock themselves into. Mine is Haven Eclipse, my wacky not-so-safe-place I go to regularly to escape the nightmare of reality. Haven isn't completely perfect, it is sometimes dark but it is a place I can go where anything is possible. Haven is more of an institution where all my characters, both developed and hardly developed, live in peace... well not all of them. My main recurring characters, White Wing, Neofreak, and Logan are usually always in a living hell. Never piss off your writer, they might drop a tank on your head.

Storm Ahead

Usually it was semi-peaceful. There was some kind of point to each day, there were downs to the days but the surrounding heaven always counter balanced it. It was much greater than the nightmare reality past the blue skies. For those who paid attention, far on the horizon was a dark black line of reality that they never got closer to.

Today however was different. Definitely different.

“What.... the hell is that?” White Wing grumbled, the back of her neck tingling uneasily. She was standing on top of the dark ruddy brown roof of Main House, looking over the thick trees of Haven. During today Haven was plunged in a world of gray and washed out colour, the inhabitants of the floating paradise gloomier than usual. White Wing was staring at the sky in front of them, her raptor vision allowing her to see past the land where Haven ended and the sky began. No more than hundred miles away was a thick black shade to the sky. It stretched across the horizon like a demonic rope that went on forever.

The rough wind that since recently attacked Haven whipped White Wing’s dark dirt blond shoulder length hair out of her dark suspicious ocean blue eyes. She didn’t like the feel of that dark cloud or fog that lay before Haven’s slow floating course. The large floating island couldn’t be steered manually; it went whatever way it pleased. Right now it was heading straight for the dark mass ahead of them and it felt like it was picking up speed.

White Wing was your everyday average bird girl, tall, skinny, slightly long, the physic of someone who went to the gym weekly at the least. Her bright white wings were pulled tightly against her back, itching to snap open. The wind was too harsh though. These were not flying conditions.

‘Dammit Akiko you leave just at the worst moment possible. I kinda need to know what that thing is out there.’ White Wing thought sourly, glaring up at the grey cloudy sky. Akiko, the creator of Haven and even White Wing herself, was a sort of crazy writer who listened to too much GoRILLaZ for her own good. She always appeared as a voice from everywhere, usually dropping large heavy metal objects out of the sky onto White Wing. Most of the time the bird girl deserved it though.

The winds rudely shoved waves into Lake May, the strangely dark green waters sweeping up onto the grass shore. White Wing had a feeling that Sunset Drop Beach was being crashed by dark green white capped waves as people she recognized that lived there where heading towards Main House. All of this just because White Wing and Akiko had made fun of Max in a fanfiction. The two girls were poking fun at the image of a bearded bird girl Max from a chapter of Fable II: the Flock Chapters, a fanfic they had been reading. To get them back, Max unplugged the cord to Haven’s well being and happiness located in a secret location rumored to be somewhere in Sky Ridge. Once Max had unplugged that, the cord had slithered away and Haven was plunged into a dreary grey world. The humour that came so naturally to White Wing and her supposed ‘family’ as Akiko called them was lost.

“Any time Akiko.” White Wing growled at the sky, half expecting to see a dark object falling towards her. If Akiko knew what was going on, she wasn’t doing or saying anything about it. “Great.” White Wing muttered, jumping down from the roof onto her balcony. Trying her best not to be flattened against the side of the Main House White Wing glided down to the ground, where the wind wasn’t as harsh. Still it was annoyingly getting in her face, whipping her cheeks.

“STUPID STORM!!!” White Wing screamed in frustration throwing her hands into the air, just for them to painfully be shoved back by a large gust of wind. White Wing folded her arms with a growl. ‘I hate this weather, I just hate it. This Haven not Vancouver. You better be watching your back Max.’

Over the wind White Wing heard her name being called from behind. Turning White Wing spotted Neofreak calling from a window on the second floor. Neofreak’s hands were cupping her mouth, a slightly darker shade than White Wing’s skin. Her dark chocolate brown eyes were wide like always, a white fedora sitting on top of her mop of dark brown curly hair. Straining her ears White Wing tried to hear what Neofreak was shouting.

“White Wing, come on! You can’t be out there in that storm. Get inside!!!”

That weird feeling of going numb yet you’re skin tingling on the inside at the same time flooded White Wing with dread. The reason why she hated storms so much was the fact that she had to go inside a building or something with a roof. Everyone was going to stay away from the third floor; Neofreak wouldn’t let White Wing anywhere close to the third floor stairs. The thought of being stuck under one or more floors made White Wing want to run to the edge of Haven and fling herself into the stormy sky. Mostly against her will White Wing trudged to the door, her hand brushing against the door frame before the wind slammed the solid oak door behind her.
